More Than a Market
Building Community Through Fresh Produce
Becoming a Market Manager was never part of my plan, but life has a way of leading us to unexpected and rewarding paths. What started as a simple volunteering role with The Community Grocer, a non-profit organization, quickly turned into a meaningful journey—one that has challenged me, shaped me, and filled me with immense pride.
I began as a volunteer, dedicating one day a week to setting up the market, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, and packing up at the end of the day. At first, I thought that was all there was to it. But I quickly realized it was so much more. I learned about seasonal produce, developed a deep appreciation for the journey from farm to fork, and most importantly, connected with the community in a way I never expected.
Community means everything to me. Living abroad without family, the people I’ve met through The Community Grocer have become my second family. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredibly kind and supportive individuals—shoutout to Rona and Ted, who always make my day! Taking on this role in the middle of a pandemic was daunting, but with the unwavering support of this community, I made it through.
The Community Grocer’s mission aligns perfectly with my passion: making fresh, affordable produce accessible to everyone. And let me tell you—the fruits and vegetables are not only fresh, but they taste amazing (and no, I’m not biased!). Currently, we have markets in Carlton, Fitzroy, Heidelberg, and Pakenham, with hopes of expanding further. You can find me at the Heidelberg Market every Saturday—come by and say hi! 😊
Through all the challenges, especially during the pandemic, The Community Grocer has come a long way. I couldn’t be prouder of my incredible teammates—Tess, Bella, and Madie—we did it!
